An Overview

Polyurethane, abbreviated as PU, as used in rapid prototyping is a material that mimics many of the properties of production materials. The material is used is any polymer consisting of a chain of organic units joined by urethane links and is a type of thermoplastic. Different polyurethane formulations offer a range of materials from the elasticity of rubber to the stiffness and impact resistance of engineered plastics. This range of material properties allows polyurethanes to be used in thousands of prototyping applications across all fields. Products made using polyurethane are commonly referred to as "urethanes". Polyurethanes are in a class of compounds called reaction polymers. In an uncured state they are separated into Part A and Part B liquid compounds. When combined the mixture hardens resulting in a part with the physical properties of the polyurethane.
