An Overview

Functional models are models resulting from Rapid Prototyping that perform the desired primary and essential functions for a part. These models can be used to perform design testing of the part and any assemblies containing the part to verify that any needed functions have been included in the design and to detect any flaws in the design. These models can also be used to perform functional demonstrations for customers and to test the market for the final part.

Examples of testing that can be performed on a functional model is to study lift and drag forces within a wind tunnel, study oil flow in a transmission, to study stresses on parts autonomously or within an assembly.

Functional models can also be used to develop procedures for testing the corresponding part in production to confirm sustained quality of the part.
