An Overview
Color and texture matching refers to matching the color and texture of a part's finish. Color and texture of a finish is considered to be two key components in a part's appearance. This matching may need to occur with respect to a customer's specification or with respect to other parts that the part being matched may need to be assembled with.
Matching can be complicated in that the color and texture of a finish can vary depending on the material of the part.
The texture of a finish can be applied as a separate process. Two types of texturing are solvent base and powder coating. Solvent base consists of applying a base paint to the part, oven baking the part, spraying texture over the part, and oven baking the part again. The main texture for solvent base coating, called Lavant, produces a glossy bumpy finish. Powder coating consists of mixing powder with texture and applying over the part. Some popular powder coatings are:
- Coarse to Fine: similar to sandpaper
- Vein: two colors having marbled appearance
- Wrinkle: cross squares with a matte finish
- Hammer Tone: crackly finish like shattered glass
- Weathered: primary color with flakes of another color
- Metallic
- Orange Peel: texture of an orange
